Taliban cited as saying it wants 'fruitful and working relationship' with foreign powers, including US

The Afghan Taliban are hoping that the next United States administration will fully implement the agreement signed in February in the Qatari capital of Doha, the group told The Media Line Wednesday.

Under the treaty, the United States was to pull out all of its troops from the country, as well as the NATO forces, if the Taliban cut its ties with al-Qaeda and engaged in talks with the authorities in Kabul.

“Based on mutual respect, the… Taliban want to establish a fruitful and working relationship with all countries, including the United States,” a Taliban spokesman told the agency.

“We inked the peace agreement with the US government, not with any specific person. Regardless of whoever is in power in the US, both sides are obligated to abide by that agreement,” he added.

Earlier this week, the Afghan government urged the United States to reconsider the Doha treaty, accusing the Taliban of showing "inflexibility" in the talks that have shown little progress since the first session in September. Read more at i24
