Biden has been a vocal critic of the Islamist leader, branding him an 'autocrat'

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan congratulated presumed US President-elect Joe Biden on his expected victory in the 2020 Presidential Election.

While most media outlets declared Biden the winner, the official count is still ongoing and Trump is yet to concede. He is also reportedly planning a raft of lawsuits, having alleged extensive voter fraud.

In his message, Erdogan reiterated Ankara’s “determination to work closely with the US Administration” in the coming period, adding that “the strong cooperation and alliance” between the two countries would continue to contribute to world peace. 

"I congratulate you on your election success and convey my sincere wishes for the peace and welfare of the US people," Erdogan said in a statement published by his office. 

The Turkish strongman hasn't shied away from friction with Washington during Trump's presidency, including a controversy over Turkey's purchase of S-400 missile defense system from Russia in the face of the threat of US sanctions. Read more at i24
