As I was walking around with my lulav and esrog in hand during the hakafos of Hoshana Rabbah, I couldn’t help but notice the holy Sifrei Torah stationed smack in the middle, at the core. In fact, the Halacha is that if there are no Sifrei Torah present, we would not walk around and perform the hakafos; thus, the primary aspect of the hakafos is the fact that the Torah is at the center!
It is interesting to point out that the hakafos of Hoshana Rabbah seem to mimic Earth’s structure and layout. On the outside layer of Earth, that is where humans, animals, and vegetation exist and thrive. But, at the very center of Earth, lies a ball of fire – the core – that creates a magnetic field which is crucial for life on Earth.
Think about it. On Hoshana Rabbah, we – humans, along with the vegetation (in the form of the arba minim) – walk around the perimeter of the circle, and at the core of it all, lies the spiritual ball of fire, the Torah. Similar to Earth’s core, the Torah too creates a magnetic field, albeit a spiritual magnetic field which is crucial for spiritual life and existence on Earth. It is this magnetic field that enables us to connect and have a relationship with Hashem, the Master of the Universe.
It's pretty remarkable to think about the fact that we only need to travel a mere 62 miles from sea level to enter space, however, to reach Earth’s core, we would need to travel about 1800 miles! When it comes to external things, we have no problem exploring, journeying, and traveling. Through technology, we can see stars and galaxies that are lightyears away. Yet, the innermost place of our planet, Earth’s core, which is right beneath our feet, is impossible to reach and see.
This is such a good mashal for life. You see, external matters are relatively easy to come by and experience. Yet, the greatest challenge we have is reaching what lies right inside of us, our core. Whereas Chitzonius is readily accessible, Penimius is much harder to access. But the goal of life is to work hard accessing that Penimius, that core that is us.
The Chag of Shemini Atzeres/Simchas Torah is a time to connect with that innermost spiritual part of us. It’s a time to connect to our core. We dance with the Torah, which is the spiritual core of the world, and as we become elevated through dancing, it reminds us that each of us also contains a spiritual core, a Neshama, a chelek Eloka mi’maal mamash. And the more we connect to that part of us, the more of a magnetic field is created between us and Hashem.
The last verse of the Torah references the breaking of the Luchos. But we have to think about WHY Moshe broke the Luchos? In short, it’s because the Jewish people were dancing around a physical Golden Calf, a deity. That was a grave mistake, and on Shemini Atzeres/Simchas Torah, when we dance around the Torah, we are showing what truly lies at the core of existence.
My friends, the dancing around the Torah is the single greatest tikkun for the mistake of the Golden Calf, in which the Jewish people danced around a physical deity.
Have a good Shabbos and Yom Tov!
