Baltimore, MD - July 17, 2023 - 28 Tammuz 5783 - As the 16th yahrzeit of the renowned Rav of Khal Arugas Habosem of Baltimore Rabbi Amrom Taub, zt"l, approaches, it is a time of reflection upon the tremendous loss for the Baltimore kehilla and the rest of the torah world.
Rabbi Taub zt"l, a holocaust survivor came to America in 1949 looking forward with tremendous optimism, emunah, bitachon, and a desire to rebuild, and rebuild he did, with a powerful impact upon the community that will be remembered for generations. He first went to Williamsburg to be close to the Satmar Rebbe, R' Yoel Teitelbaum zt"l , The Rebbe sent him to Baltimore to establish a Bais Hamedrash, Mikvah and build Torah there. Rabbi Taub, zt"l, obeyed without a question, moving to an unfamiliar community where he built Torah & Yiddishkeit for over 57 years.
He faced great challenges; he was the only chassidishe yid in the entire town and whose children had curly payos. He started a cheder in his house, teaching the talmidim on his own, spicing his lessons with simcha and humor, injecting them with simchas hachaim and pride in what they represented.
His challenge intensified when he lost his wife, the mother of his 9 children ages 3-17, after struggling with a disease for 3 years. Then he took care of everything; raising his lively children, dealing with dilemmas, guiding the kehila, leading the shul, inspiring and filling the dual role all with a positive attitude that radiated to those around him. His entire life was one of giving, of doing, of creating. He was a teacher, mentor, caring advisor, father, trusted friend and the list goes on and on for each person merited to have met him. Yidden from all walks of life considered him their leader, role model, and moreh derech. Whether it was counseling a family in distress or chinuch advice, he was instrumental in salvaging many mishpachos, dealing with the logistics of building a mikvah, pasteurizing his own cholov yisroel milk, He never rested upon his laurels. In addition to his numerous qualities, Rabbi Taub, zt"l, was a mohel mumcha serving the Baltimore community. He was a talmid chochom of stature, revered and respected by Roshei yeshivas and Rabbonimin in both Chassidishe and Yeshivishe worlds.
And his shul Khal Arugas Habosem known in the community as “Rabbi Taub's Shul” was a makom kadosh where everyone felt comfortable, where children were encouraged to attend. The shul was open all day, and minyanim were held from early morning until very late. There were no ‘hours’ to meet Rabbi Taub who made himself available to all.
To this day the bais midrash and mikvahs are visited and complimented by people from all over. It has become a center of purity, open and accessible to the public daily and evenings as needed, erev Shabbos and erev YomTov.
He was nifter 28th of Tamuz, shabbos parshas Matos-Masei on the yahrtzeit of the Yismach Moshe who was the great-grandfather of Reb Yoel Teitelbaum, zt”l ,who was to Rabbi Taub a guiding light.
