Baltimore, MD - Apr. 12, 2022 - As part of their Mitzvah Week trip through Jewish Baltimore, last week, Beth Tfiloh’s sixth grade girls took a field trip to the STAR-K offices to learn about Kosher and kosher certification. STAR-K Kashrus Administrators Rabbi Baruch Beyer and Rabbi Zvi Goldberg hosted the 24 girls and their teachers. They enjoyed noshing on STAR-K certified licorice as they watched a video about how it is made and learned about the kosher challenges of such a production, which Rabbi Goldberg has personally supervised. The presentation led to a lively discussion about kosher and the role that STAR-K plays in ensuring that kosher food is available locally and worldwide.

The students also watched a video that showed the meticulous care taken by royal chefs in preparing the food served to Queen Elizabeth II. A parallel was drawn by Rabbi Beyer between the royal diet and kosher. He ended the session by explaining that as Hashem’s special children of Hashem, the Torah enjoins us to eat only the best Kosher foods as befitting the exalted “royal” status of the Jewish people.

Rabbi Beyer was very impressed with the girls, “The girls all seemed bright, eager, and respectful, and asked some insightful questions,” says Rabbi Beyer. “I think they left with a good taste of what the STAR-K and Kosher is all about.”

A couple of the girls’ reactions corroborates this. Efrat S. commented, “I learned that they really work hard to make things kosher.” Adina B. mentioned, “It was interesting to hear about how they have to check all the products and equipment. I like how they surprise the companies by coming.”

Beth Tfiloh’s coordinator of the trip, Mrs. Chanie Steinharter, concluded, “The girls really enjoyed visiting STAR-K and learning about the intricacies of Kashrus that they didn't know before.”
