Baltimore, MD – May 26, 2016 - The Not Just a Sta"M Event this past Sunday, was not like any other, it was NOT STAM! On a rainy Sunday afternoon, adults and children convened for a wholesome, educational and engaging program built from scratch around the theme of STa"M: Sefer Torah, Tefillin and Mezuzah, under the auspices of Shearith Israel Congregation, also known as the Glen Avenue Shul.

It ‎is NOT STAM when ‎teenage boys sit beside experienced Sofrim practicing how to form safrus letters as they appear in a mezuzah.

It is NOT STAM to see a display of Wimpels (pronounced vimpels) dating back to 1906 – as was the Wimpel of Mr. Martin Bamberger, Z’L, patriarch of the chashuva Baltimore Bambergers - or the original vimpel of TA’s popular Rebbi, Rabbi Yossi Flam, brought to shul for Gelilah a little more recently! ‎

What is a wimpel, you ask? A wimpel is a personalized cloth "belt" used to wrap the Sefer Torah at Gelilah time, that yekkishe (German) families donate to their shul when a little boy turns three.

The Not Just a Sta"M Event built excitement in anticipation of the upcoming Hachnasas Sefer Torah in honor of Rabbi Yaakov Hopfer, shlita's, 30th anniversary serving Shearith Israel Cong. and the greater Baltimore Orthodox community.

It is NOT STAM to watch a talented seamstresses display and sew stunning white satin with  braided trim and sparkling stones to create an original Chupah for the Hachnasas Sefer Torah in September. Miriam Adani of the Kever Rochel Hachnasas Kallah Fund is looking forward to receiving Baltimore's handmade chupah to use at the weddings of the couples they assist in Israel.

It is NOT STAM to witness hundreds of ‎children gather around to decorate the 4x12 foot mosaic banner that will be carried through our streets as the community welcomes the Sefer Torah to its new home.

The children (and adults) were also entertained by 3 very NOT STAM Puppet Shows

One father from Silver Spring called up afterward to comment, “What an amazing event! My kids had such a great time and it was so well-run!" Madelyne Fischer, a strategic volunteer who moved from Miami to Baltimore a few years ago remarked, "People really enjoyed the quality time with family, the welcoming atmosphere, and the creative outlets for the children to show their love for HKB"H."

With literally hundreds of hours of planning, and over 70 volunteers, it was NOT just a STAM event; it was the day that history was made, a day the Baltimore Jewish community will not soon forget.

Here, take a look! The pictures speak for themselves!
