עניני אלול:

We are נוהג starting from ראש חדש אלול that when writing letters to our friends we mention that they should be זוכה in the דין[1], for instance writing כתיבה וחתימה טובה. If one sends an email to his friend during אלול he should also sign off with wishing his friend to be זוכה בדין[2].

סליחות:

·       Date of סליחות: אשכנזים begin saying סליחות on מוצאי שבת[3] or (Sunday morning) prior to ראש השנה. There is always a minimum of four days on which סליחות are said[4]. If ראש השנה begins on a Thursday or שבת, then we start on the מוצאי שבת immediately before ראש השנה. If ראש השנה begins on a Monday or Tuesday, we start on the מוצאי שבת a week earlier[5].

·       Time of סליחות: The preferred time for סליחות is in the last אשמורה[6] of the night before עלות השחר. One may not say סליחות earlier than [7] חצות הלילה. Some say, if the only מנין in town has סליחות before חצות הלילה one may join although the סליחות don’t accomplish as much when said at that time[8]. On מוצאי שבת it is even more important not to say סליחות before [9]חצות הלילה.

·       ברכות before סליחות: If one wakes up to say סליחות (as opposed to staying up and saying after חצות הלילה before he goes to sleep), he should say [10]ברכת התורה and preferably other [11]ברכות השחר before סליחות. One may say all the [12]ברכות השחר even before הנץ (sunrise) as long as it is after עלות השחר[13].

·       סליחות when not davening in Shul:

It is better for a מנין to daven in a Shul[14]. Nonetheless, a מנין may say all parts of סליחות even if they are not davening in Shul. They may say the parts for which we open the ארון קודש even though they have no ספר תורה.

·       One who is saying סליחות without a מנין:

It is better for a person to daven with a מנין[15]. Nonetheless, one says סליחות even if he cannot daven with a מנין[16]. However, there are certain parts which are different.

·       If a group of people did not have ten people until the middle of סליחות:

o   קדיש: There is a קדיש generally said after אשרי at the beginning of סליחות. This is said at the end of whatever paragraph they are up to when a מנין arrives[23].

o   י"ג מידות: Until ten people arrive they do not say any parts that one davening by himself does not say. If by the time that ten people arrive they have already past all the times that we say י"ג מידות, they say קֵל מֶלֶךְ יוֹשֵׁב upon the arrival of the tenth man.

·       וידוי: During the עשרת ימי תשובה one says וידוי at the end of סליחות. וידוי begins with the words אֲבָל אֲנַחְנוּ וַאֲבוֹתֵינוּ חָטָאנוּ.

May we all be זוכה to a כתיבה וחתימה טובה
