President Donald Trump is promoting the success of the federal crackdown on crime in Washington, D.C.
He is now setting his sights on other troubled cities, including Chicago, promising he'll clean up their streets, too.
During Labor Day weekend, at least 54 people were shot in Chicago, with seven people killed.
Residents and the Chicago Police Department welcome any federal law enforcement. But Democratic leaders -- including Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson -- continue to refuse help and have even ordered city police to not work with ICE on any operations.
Jody Weis, who is the former head of the Chicago Police Department, said the work that’s being done in D.C. is the blueprint of how federal authorities can work with federal authorities. He said he finds it “absurd” that Pritzker and Johnson are opposed to getting help from federal authorities.
If you don’t want the fed help, then you must be happy with the numbers you have in crime,” Weis told The National News Desk’s Jan Jeffcoat during a one-on-one interview Tuesday. “And we all know the only acceptable number for murder would be zero.”Weis said if you look at the statistics, someone is murdered in Chicago every 19 hours and 58 minutes. Every four hours and 19 minutes, someone is shot.
He said 78% of the people who are shot are Black, while 81% of the offenders are Black.
So, you’ve got Black on Black crime,” he said. “And yet the governor and the mayor said they don’t want any help. So, to me, when you refuse help you are saying you are happy with the numbers – and that is absolutely unacceptable in Chicago right now.”Weis said the number one responsibility of government officials is to protect the people they serve.
I see JB Pritzker walking the lake at 6 o’clock in the morning saying, ‘There’s no crime here. It’s beautiful,’” Weis said. “Well, it’s 6 o’clock in the morning along the lake. I live pretty close to that area. There is no crime. Let him walk in the Austin neighborhood or the Inglewood neighborhoods at 11 o’clock because that’s where many of his constituents live – and they’re not going to feel safe.”Weis added that Johnson frequently says the city needs more affordable housing. But Weis said that’s “ridiculous.”
