Baltimore, MD - Aug. 22, 2025 -  Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott weighed in on Maryland Gov. Wes Moore's invitation for President Donald Trump to visit the city on Friday, saying that officials need to see "commitments" from the President, whether or not he accepts the invite.

After calling out President Trump by name Thursday at a press conference before the demolition of Pimlico Race Course, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore invited the president to visit Baltimore to discuss "strategies for effective public safety policy."

At the press conference, Moore said, "I do want to be very clear: If you are not willing to be part of the solution, keep our name out of your mouth. Specifically, Donald Trump. If you are not willing to walk our communities, keep our name out of your mouth. If you are not willing to stand with our people, keep our name out of your mouth.”

Shortly after Thursday morning’s event, Moore, through an official letter and a post on X, invited Trump to attend a public safety walk through the city with himself, Mayor Scott and State’s Attorney Ivan Bates, all of whom are Democrats.

On Friday, Scott weighed in with a post on X:

"President Trump's takeover of Washington, DC's police force makes two things very clear. First: that he will do anything, and sacrifice anyone, to boos his own ego. And second: that he has no real solutions to make our country any safer, healthier, or freer.

Here in Baltimore, we have driven down violence to 50-year lows, with significant reductions across every major crime category. This has not happened by chance. It is the result of an intentional strategy, coordinated alongside local, state, and federal law enforcement, violence interrupters, and community leaders.

In contrast, the President has embraced unconstitutional stop-and-frisk tactics, diverted federal law enforcement from their actual jobs to instead conduct indiscriminate traffic stops, and slashed funding for public safety programs that are driving real progress.

Whether the President chooses to accept Governor Moore's invitation or not, here are the commitments our city needs to see from the President:

Only these commitments, not actions that erode our residents' rights, would help our work to reduce violent crime. Otherwise, if Trump wants to roll into Baltimore purely to stage a photo op and spew racist narratives about Black-led cities, I speak for the vast majority of our residents when I say: We are not interested."As of this writing, Trump has yet to accept or deny the invitation to visit Baltimore.
