IRS Proposal Could Let Houses of Worship Endorse Political Candidates
Maryland – July 15, 2025 – (MM) A new IRS proposal is drawing attention for its potential to reshape the line between religion and politics. The rule would allow houses of worship — including shuls, mosques, and churches — to openly endorse political candidates from the pulpit without risking their tax-exempt status.
The change stems from a proposed settlement that softens the longstanding restrictions under the Johnson Amendment, which has barred 501(c)(3) religious organizations from direct political endorsements for decades. Supporters of the new rule argue it affirms free speech and religious freedom, while critics warn it could politicize sacred spaces and erode public trust.
The proposal would still prohibit campaign contributions and partisan spending by religious nonprofits, but leaders would have greater leeway in their personal or public remarks.
