Baltimore, MD - May 15, 2025 - The water quality in the Baltimore region is generally in decline with major concerns surrounding the Baltimore Harbor, Tidal Patapsco, and Gwynns Falls watersheds, according to the 2025 Water Quality Report Card by Blue Water Baltimore, a nonprofit environmental organization.
“With 15 years of data, we can start to see long-term trends in our data,” said Alice Volpitta, the Baltimore Harbor Waterkeeper for Blue Water Baltimore. “This sort of smooths out the year-to-year fluctuations and gives us a better idea of which direction we’re headed — healthier or sicker — regardless of rainfall.
“Our data has revealed that unfortunately, overall water health is on the decline in three of our four major ecological regions: the Gwynns Falls, Baltimore Harbor, and Tidal Patapsco River.”
The water quality scores are calculated from zero through 100% on various factors consisting of chlorophyll, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, water clarity, and total nitrogen and phosphorus. The higher the score, the healthier the waterway.
