Baltimore, MD - May 6, 2025  - The Maryland Stadium Authority said that the plan is in place to transform Pimlico into the home of Maryland Thoroughbred Racing, as they forecasted 500 jobs that would come to the area.

MSA Chairman Craig Thompson said that Pimlico will go from hosting 15 events a year to well over a hundred, and that it “will be a year-round hub of economic activity in Park Heights and the Park Heights area. It’s going to feature not just a world-class race track but also a hotel.”

On Wednesday, the Board of Public Works is going to consider a demo package for Pimlico.

“Pending the approval, MSA is going to begin the teardown of buildings at Pimlico soon after Preakness 150,” he said.

Laurel will host next year’s Preakness and the race will return to Pimlico in 2027.

Gary McQuigan, executive vice president of the Maryland Stadium Authority, expects to see a physical demolition.

“Right now, we’re predicting late June,” he said.

McQuigan said Pimlico won’t be designated as a historic site, but they plan on saving the wood beams from the clubhouse.

“Also, there’s history with the Preakness barn,s, and we’re looking at ways to celebrate and save some of the aspects of the barns,” he added.

McQuigan said he feels pretty confident that they will be returning Preakness to Pimlico in 2027
