The House of Representatives has successfully elected a new Speaker, 22 days after Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) vacated the post.

House Republicans have chosen Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson as the chamber's new leader.

They nominated Johnson late Tuesday following a 24-hour period during which over a dozen candidates presented their leadership pitches in two candidate forums. The nomination of Majority Whip Tom Emmer (Minn.) was also briefly considered but later withdrawn after former President Trump expressed disapproval.

Johnson, 51, now holds the position of Speaker of the House, previously serving as the House GOP's vice chairman since 2021. He is also a former chairman of the Republican Study Committee, the largest conservative caucus in the House
