Baltimore, MD - Sept. 1, 2023 - State troopers in Maryland will ramp up patrols to combat impaired, distracted, and aggressive driving over the Labor Day weekend as part of the "No DUI Friday" initiative from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reports Pikesville Patch. SPIDRE, a specialized unit dedicated to identifying impaired drivers, will also be on the lookout. Statistics reveal an average of 169 fatalities and 2,998 injuries annually from impaired driving in the state between 2017 and 2021. The initiative receives funding from the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration's Highway Safety Office, which provides guidelines to ensure road safety during the holiday. In Baltimore County, the Golden Ring Barrack will concentrate its enforcement efforts on Interstates 695, 795, and 83.
