Baltimore, MD – Aug. 3, 2023 - FOX45 uncovered an internal memo showing that Baltimore City Police Department (BPD) is struggling with severe staffing shortages. To address this, Acting Commissioner Richard Worley offered patrol officers in various districts bonuses of $5,000 to switch to understaffed shifts and districts. Officers moving from the day shift to the night shift will receive $2,000. The BPD is short 532 officers, and the police union claims the shortage is closer to 700 officers. The move aims to balance officer distribution, but some may be forced to switch through rotations if not enough volunteers come forward. The police union supports the initiative and emphasizes the need for increased pay and bonuses to retain officers.
