Baltimore, MD - July 10, 2023 – Baltimore City's police districts redistricting process started yesterday Sunday, July 9 @7:00AM.
The Baltimore Police Department (BPD) has recently completed months of redistricting efforts, utilizing a data-driven approach to create new district lines. The primary objectives of this endeavor were to balance officer workload, align with the staffing plan, and provide more equitable policing services across all neighborhoods in the city. While the new district lines will be in effect for the next decade, the BPD will continue to regularly review and reassess the data, making necessary adjustments to posts as needed. It is important to note that thanks to Councilman Yitzy Schleifer, the Northwest district, due to its coverage of a larger area, including several high-crime neighborhoods, received an increase in police coverage under the new plan decreasing response times. It is also important to note that the Jewish community which had previously been split between the Northwest and Northern districts is now consolidated into the Northwest district, streamlining communication during the holidays and communal events. The BPD's redistricting process strives to equalize officer workload, minimize driving distances, maintain neighborhood cohesion, ensure equitable response times, and distribute resources evenly throughout the city.
