A new drug appears to be a breakthrough in the fight against Alzheimer's disease.

The clinical trial of the drug lecanemab showed it was effective at slowing the progression of the disease, drugmakers Eisai and Biogen announced.

“I think it’s historic,” said George Vradenburg, chairman and co-Founder of advocacy organization UsAgainstAlzheimer’s. “It’s a game-changer.”

Vradenburg said this is a “first step” towards a cure, though he stressed it is not a cure or a means of preventing Alzheimer’s disease.

“There’ll be other drugs that come through the pipeline this year and next, and the years after this, but it demonstrates for the first time, for the first time, that we can modify the course of the disease,” he said.
