Influenza activity in the summer is usually low, but one local doctor encourages people to get the shot before the flu season ramps up.

Flu shots are now available, so when is the best time to get one? Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic’s Dr. Jason Singh spoke with 7News Health Reporter Victoria Sanchez about the topic.

“Optimal timing is before influenza activity begins in the community, which varies but typically starts in October and peaks between December and February, although activity can be seen as late as May,” said Singh. “It takes about two weeks to rise and get vaccinated, so that’s why it’s important to get it done before the flu activity starts.”

Why should people get a flu shot?

Though there was a sharp drop in flu cases over the past two years, pandemic precautions including wearing masks, social distancing and increased hand washing are likely the reasons for the decline.

“It might be back in full force now that kids are back in school and most COVID restrictions are lifted,” explained Dr. Singh said.

“There are COVID booster shots. Are there flu booster shots?” Sanchez asked.
