A Pikesville man is already working to raise money for possible refugees from Ukraine.

The second day of the Ukrainian invasion by Russian forces is having an impact on members of Baltimore's Jewish community.

"The situation is very dire. It's very grim," said Vlad Volinsky, of Pikesville, who was born in what is now Ukraine.

Volinsky has many friends who live in Ukraine, including one who runs a Jewish day school with 200 students.

"They're attacking not just targets that are military targets, but they're attacking civilian targets, the Russians are, and they really don't know what the end is going to be," Volinsky said. "Everybody's in shock. Nobody expected that something like this would happen. You know? That he would really go after, really, just the general population."
