An earthquake off the coast of Cyprus Wednesday night was also felt in Israel.

The United States Geological Survey recorded the quake at a magnitude of 5.3.

Local sources said the tremble began at 11:04 pm, striking some 33 miles off the western coast of the island.

The Associated Press said it was an aftershock from a 6.5-magnitude quake felt last month, according to the Cypriot Geological Survey Department.

Israeli officials issued no warning, as it posed so significant risk to Israeli citizens. Despite this, experts have warned that too many structures in the Jewish state are insufficiently equipped to handle a severe earthquake.

A big tremor of between 6.5 and 7.5 on the Richter scale in Israel, which comes around once a century, threatens to cause extensive damage.
