News of the planned meeting also arrives amid US and China updates on their hypersonic missile programs
The White House is reportedly planning a virtual discussion between United States President Joe Biden and China’s leader Xi Jinping.
US officials are hoping that direct communications with Xi will calm rising tensions between Washington and Beijing.
The US is considering holding a video conference call between the leaders, two sources informed Reuters, citing difficulties in navigating both Xi’s hesitancy to travel and China’s vast Covid regulations.
However, planning on the meeting is still underway on the matter.
“We are still planning details of the virtual bilateral meeting and there is nothing to preview at this time,” a US official said, Reuters reported.
“We think it's particularly important for the leaders to take more of a role in managing this relationship.”
Beijing-Washington relations are under pressure after a US official accused China of genocide.
