She was clinically dead for 45 minutes, but miraculously, doctors brought her back to life.

A Baltimore County woman went into cardiac arrest while she was waiting for the birth of her granddaughter at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. Thankfully, she was in the right place at the right time when her heart stopped. Against all odds, Kathy Patten is now enjoying her life as a mom and now a new grandmother. She has experienced a full-functioning recovery after her astounding near-death experience.

Dr. Dov Frankel was one of the doctors who rushed to help when the code blue was announced. "You asked why we didn't give up. We didn't give up because you didn't give up. You were going to survive," Frankel said.

Tuesday, with big hugs and a smile hidden behind a medical mask, Patten thanked the doctors who brought her back to life.

"From the bottom of my heart, there are no words to express everything everyone has done here for me," Patten said.

Two months ago, her heart stopped beating. She was in the pre-birthing room at GBMC waiting for her daughter to give birth when she fell ill. She was rushed to the emergency department and on her way there she went into cardiac arrest with no pulse, blood pressure, or oxygen to her brain.

Patten was clinically dead for 45 minutes. After CPR and other lifesaving measures, miraculously, she woke up without any damage to her brain.

"I'm honored to be here, to be around so many wonderful people that believe in what Dr. Frankel said — treat a person, not a patient, like they want to live. It's amazing," Patten said.
