One police officer has reportedly died after a violent incident at a transit station outside the Pentagon on Tuesday, prompting the building to temporarily lock down.

The Associated Press, citing law enforcement officials, reported that a police officer was stabbed during a burst of violence and has died.

The Pentagon was put on lockdown earlier Tuesday morning following reports of gunshots being fired at a nearby Metro station.

The Hill reached out to the Pentagon police for additional information.

The Pentagon Force Protection Agency (PFPA) announced in a tweet that the Defense Department building was on lockdown because of an unspecified “incident” at the Pentagon Transit Center.

Details of the situation remain unknown, but the AP reported earlier that multiple gunshots were fired near a platform by the facility’s Metro station.

An AP reporter who was near the Pentagon said they heard multiple gunshots.
