Daily infection rate remains high as government moves closer to greenlighting booster shot

Israel's Health Ministry on Wednesday reported 2,260 new daily COVID-19 cases as the upward trend continues that started in late June following the introduction of the highly contagious delta variant into the country.

A total of 153 serious or critically ill patients were listed as of Wednesday morning, including 35 in critical condition and 28 on respirators.

The positivity rate stood at 2.38 percent out of 95,624 tests administered on Tuesday.

The total number of fatalities since the pandemic began stood at 6,460.

While more than 5.3 million people in Israel have received two vaccine doses, the government is close to expanding a booster shot to older adults. Currently, the third vaccine is only available to people who are severely immunocompromised.

"We’re on top of it, believe me,” Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said on Tuesday. “For at least a month [we’ve been working on] things that need to come to fruition. We’re very close. The less we talk about it, the greater chance it’ll happen. I’m on it.”
