Israel's Health Ministry looking at possibility of third vaccine jab

Despite Israel's record-setting vaccination campaign, the coronavirus pandemic persists in the Jewish state, meaning the public must learn to live with the disease in its midst, a senior healthcare official said on Saturday.

Dr. Sharon Alroy-Preis, head of public health services at Israel's Health Ministry, told Channel 12 News that the ministry was exploring the possibility of offering a booster shot to those already vaccinated.

“We are waiting to see if a third shot of the vaccine is something that we need to do. We are still examining the issue. There are two major ongoing studies at the moment that we're following.”

Having vaccinated the vast majority of its adult population, Israel is nevertheless struggling to contain an outbreak of the delta variant of the coronavirus and reintroduced a number of measures to curb the morbidity, including the mandate to wear face masks in closed spaces.

On Saturday evening, the Health Ministry reported that in the past 24 hours it logged 1,430 new virus cases.

Alroy-Preis also said that seeing as Covid tests are not 100% accurate, it's important that those arriving from abroad remain in isolation for a week, even after testing negative.
