Full withdrawal of US forces nearly finished more than two months before September 11 deadline

The US military announced on Tuesday that it has almost completed the withdrawal of its troops from Afghanistan, where Afghan authorities have deployed hundreds of pro-government soldiers and militiamen to thwart a massive Taliban offensive in the north.

US President Joe Biden announced in April that he wanted to complete this withdrawal by the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

More than two months before this deadline, the US military has finally accomplished "more than 90 percent" of its withdrawal from the country, the US military said in a statement.

Last week, US and NATO forces had already left Bagram air base, the largest in Afghanistan. Located 50 km (31 miles) north of Kabul, it had been the nerve center of their operations since the start of the military intervention launched in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

And the White House said Friday that the last American soldiers would have left Afghan territory by "the end of August."
