It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of noted rov, talmid chochom and mechanech Rav Pinchos Gruman zt”l of Los Angeles. He was 91 years old.

The longtime Los Angeles Torah leader was a talmid of European yeshivos before he immigrated to the United States many decades ago and lived in Crown Heights. He received semichah in the 1950s from Rav Moshe Feinstein zt”l and then Rav Aharon Kotler zt”l, under whom he learned at Beth Medrash Govoah in Lakewood.

He later moved to Los Angeles and laid the foundation for the Torah observant community we see today.

Rav Gruman had a rich history of service to the Los Angeles Jewish community. He revived the Rabbinical Council of California and established a community kashrus committee of which he was the chairman for 13 years.

He served with distinction for 40 years as the rov of the Young Israel of Los Angeles, Bais Naftali, Kesher Torah, and The Minyan at Aish Tamid. He was also a co-founder of the Young Israel of Hancock Park.

He was a master rebbi and principal of Rambam for twenty years, a devoted educator whose dedication drew his students to advance in Yiddishkeit and eventually earned him the title of “Mr. Rambam.”

He continued in the same vein for 25 years at Bais Yaakov of Los Angeles.

It can be said that no one in Los Angeles has impacted more students and their future Jewish homes in Torah than Rav Gruman.

Rav Gruman was an expert in the Torah of the Maharal and wrote extensively on the chiddushim of the Maharal, publishing several well-received works. A brilliant talmid chochom, Rav Gruman also held a doctorate in philosophy.

His wife, Rebbetzin Gruman, served with distinction as teacher and principal on the East Coast for many years and continued her career in Jewish education as a principal in Bais Tzivia in Los Angeles.

Rav Gruman’s son, Rabbi Aaron Gruman, is the rov of Congregation Toras Emes in Twin Rivers, NJ. The other children include Rav Dovid Gruman, Rebbe in Yeshiva Gedolah of LA,  Mrs. Malky (R' Asher) Ansbacher of Lakewood, Mrs. Esther (R' Yehuda) Fuss of Yerushalyim and R' Zev Gruman

His brother is Reb Nochum Stilerman, formerly of Brooklyn and presently of Yerushalayim.

Yehi zichro boruch.
