It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the petirah of Rav Yechezkel Roth zt”l, the Karlsburger Rov. He was 85 years old. Rav Roth suffered a heart attack this morning.

Rav Roth was a renowned posek and the author of the nine-volume Emek Hateshuvah. In addition to leading the Karlsburg Bais Medrash in Boro Park, Rav Roth served as a guide to thousands across the world who turned to him for his halachic rulings and wise counsel.

His seforim included Chezkas Taharah on Hilchos Niddah, Emek Shmaatsa on Gemara, Chazon Yechezkel on Drush, Mishpat Ha’aretz on Shmittah, Keren HaTorah on Ribbis, Mai Chanukah on Hilchos Chanukah, and other works.

In March 2016, he was hospitalized after a coronary. He was famously mekadeish his wife a second time after he recovered. His wife, Rebbetzin Rochel Roth, passed away at age 77 on in 2017.

After many years of living in Eretz Yisroel, Rav Roth emigrated to the US, where he eventually became recognized as a noted posek. Years later, he began dividing his time between New York and Eretz Yisroel, where he secluded himself for weeks on end in Meron in the spiritual shadow at kever of Rav Shimon bar Yochai.

In 1972, the Satmar Rebbe, Rav Yoel Teitelbaum sought a Posek with uncompromising spiritual standards to serve on the Satmar beis din in Boro Park. Rav Roth, whose brilliance in Torah was recognized, was approved by the rebbe, who dispatched messengers to Rav Roth’s home in Eretz Yisroel requesting that Rav Roth relocate to Boro Park to disseminate Torah, and Rav Roth assented. Since then, he lived in New York.

Rav Roth soon acquired a reputation as one of the most prominent poskim, accepting the most complex sh’eilos.

Kevurah will take place in Eretz Yisroel.

Yehi zichro boruch.
