Baltimore’s Department of Transportation is encouraging downtown workers to begin their afternoon commute early Thursday, as President Donald Trump’s scheduled visit to the city is expected to cause traffic congestion.

Because of heavy traffic volumes expected from 4 to 8 p.m. in downtown Baltimore, the department suggested workers begin to leave for home before 4 p.m. to avoid delays. Some intersections may be temporarily closed in the afternoon and early evening hours, the department said in a statement. Traffic enforcement officers will work to help move traffic, the department said.

The department also advised people to use public transportation Thursday, especially if they are planning to attend the 7:05 p.m. Orioles game against the Dodgers.

Trump is scheduled to speak at the 2019 House Republican Conference Member retreat dinner on Thursday. Protests are expected outside the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront hotel in Harbor East, where the retreat is to be held.
