More than 1,000 members of Baltimore's Jewish community will spend today participating in a series of volunteer projects.
The 13th annual Mitzvah Day will take place Tuesday at the JCC in both Park Heights and in Owings Mills.
Volunteers will gather to prepare winter care packages for those living in homeless shelters. Those will include hand made scarves.
Other volunteers will prepare and serve meals in soup kitchens and nursing homes.
Mitzvah Day is one of four service days organized by the Jewish Volunteer Connection.
The other service days take place on Martin Luther King Day in January, as well as in April and September.
"it's really a day that the Jewish community feels that they are giving back to their community, and provide many opportunties for volunteers," said Mitzvah Day Chairman Dorothy Gold.
She adds that the Mitzvah Day volunteers at the shelters and nursing homes help address staffing shortages on the holiday.
While advanced registration for volunteers is closed, Gold says walk in volunteers are welcome beginning at 9 am Tuesday, at the JCC Park Heights and at 12:30 p.m. at the JCC in Owings Mills.
