The past 24 hours saw 3,514 new patients

Some 40 cities and neighborhoods across Israel returned to partial lockdown on Tuesday evening due to surging coronavirus infections in the country, with one of the highest case rates in the world. 

A curfew will be in place between 7pm and 5am for a period of one week in areas with the highest rates of infection. Residents cannot travel further away from home than 500 meters, while shops and businesses that don’t provide "essential services" must close. The education system, too, is closed in the red zones.

The decision by the so-called "corona cabinet" came after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with ferocious opposition from leading ultra-Orthodox lawmakers who bristled at the government's original plan to impose full lockdowns on communities found to have high morbidity rates.  Read more at i24
