Progressive lawmakers stir up debate on controversial proposal wiping off thousands per borrower

The members of the so-called "Squad" -- an all-female group of four firebrand and at times controversial Democratic US House of Representatives members -- stepped up the call for writing off student loans in the US.

In Tuesday's tweet, New York's Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez dismissed criticisms of the possible move as based on a reactionary premise -- 'things were bad for me, so they should stay bad for everyone else.'

Earlier, on Monday, fellow Squad member and Massachusetts Representative Ayanna Pressley proclaimed that canceling student debt was a "racial justice issue."

On Tuesday, Newsweek cited her as saying that the move "will ensure an equitable economic recovery from COVID-19, jumpstart our economy & close the racial wealth gap."

The Squad are pushing for their March proposal to write off at least $30,000 of student debt per borrower, while also providing them with a monthly payment relief, as part of the nation's efforts to tackle the COVID-19 coronavirus crisis. Read more at i24
