Jerusalem, Israel - May 18, 2023  - Buses came from all parts of Israel bringing tens of thousands of people to celebrate Yom Yerushalayim on Thursday, May 18, 2023.

The threats of violence for the celebrations for the 56th year of the reunification of Yerushalayim did not materialize. If anything more people than usual arrived to sing and dance and walk to the Old City, walking either by way of Mamilla Mall or with the crowds thru Damascus Gate.

Security lined the route, and I walked the entire Jerusalem Flag Parade with thousands of people and witnessed no violence. Saw one black flag being carried along with hundreds of blue and white Israeli flags. Boys banged on metal shutters to make noise while others were singing and reached out their hands to thank police along the way.

With so many people crammed into the small alleyways on the way to the Kotel, the pace was slow, often coming to a stop.

All ages participated, not just the busloads of boys and young men, many with their yeshiva banners. Baby strollers being pushed against my legs proved to be an unexpected annoyance.

With the tens of thousands of people at the Kotel already for Mincha and in time for Maariv, it was hard to move thru the crowd.

The weather was cooling as thousands left the Old City and hundreds more were waiting to be allowed in by way of Jaffa Gate.

From 1948-1967 under Jordanian rule, Jews were not allowed in the Old City, Yerushalayim was divided by a dangerous No Man's Land.

Today, streets were shut to traffic, as tens of thousands of people arrived to celebrate. Some gave out flowers, others took advantage of the free museum entrance, and many more walked the streets of the Old City to the Kotel, to daven, and to sing and dance well after dark.
