The Israeli internal security agency, the Shin Bet, is reportedly secretly operating in Meah Shearim. According to Arutz-7, the report claims that the Shin Bet is monitoring the area following a series of Arab terror attacks, including a shooting outside a shul in Yerushalayim that left seven dead, r'l. The objective is to determine if any right-wing Jewish groups are planning retaliation attacks against Arabs. The security officials are worried that these groups may use Meah Shearim as a base for attacks on nearby Arab neighborhoods or workers. The recent Arab terror attacks have caused fears within the Shin Bet's Jewish division of a repeat of the stabbing attacks targeting Arabs in the late 1990s. During this time, nearly a dozen Arabs were stabbed, including three fatalities, mostly in the Meah Shearim area. The identity of the perpetrator was never determined, but it was suspected to be either revenge attacks by Jews or possibly the work of a single serial stabber.
