Israel's Minister of Environmental Protection to present plan on Monday to clean up beaches

Israel's government on Sunday urged the population not to go to the beaches from north to south of the country due to pollution caused by a tar spill that reached the coast.

A joint notice issued by the Ministry of Health, Interior and Environmental Protection called on the public "not to go (to beaches) to swim, or do sports or leisure activities until further notice."

"Exposure to tar could harm public health," it added.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the government would vote on a plan to clean up Israel's beaches on Monday, following a major oil spill in the Mediterranean last week. 

"Minister [of environmental protection] Gila Gamilel will present a plan tomorrow, with a budget, to clean up beaches," Netanyahu said as he toured the beach in Ashdod. Read more at i24
