Police said they arrested the protesters for disturbance of public order

Scuffles between broke out outside Jerusalem on Saturday between Israelis protesting the government's handling of the coronavirus pandemic and police forces.

Hundreds were marching on Israel's main highway, which links Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, towards the capital to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the easing of lockdown measures. An altercation then broke out between demonstrators and police forces, resulting in the detainment of 18 people.   

Police said in a statement that they arrested the protesters for disturbing public order.

Several hundred protesters continued to march toward the Prime Minister's Residence near downtown Jerusalem, where a large-scale rally is scheduled to take place later Saturday. Read more at i24
