Likud's bloc to support Gantz in vote.

In a dramatic turn of events, Blue and White leader Benny Gantz will be voted in as the next speaker of the Knesset on Thursday after his party reached an agreement with Likud that could result in the breakup of Gantz's party.

The Likud has objected to Blue and White MK Meir Cohen becoming Knesset speaker, because he is from the Yesh Atid party in Blue and White that may end up staying out of a national unity government if it is initially led by Netanyahu. Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid has an agreement with Gantz that the speaker must come from his party.

A meeting of the cockpit of leaders in Blue and White ended in what has been described as the worst ever fight among the leaders. Sources in Blue and White said the party is closer to splitting than ever before.

Appointing Gantz as speaker gives time for coalition negotiations between Likud and Blue and White, which intensified on Thursday at the request of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (Likud) and Blue and White leader Benny Gantz.

Both sides tried to reach preliminary agreements before the 4pm vote for Knesset speaker at a special session of the Knesset plenum to replace outgoing speaker Yuli Edelstein that was requested by the Supreme Court early Thursday. Read more at JPost
