Jerusalem, Israel - Mar. 22, 2020 - Timing. They say timing is everything.

Mid-March should have been a good time to launch a new book, after Purim frivolity and feasts and before the Pesach holiday.

Chavi Eve Karkowsky educates and comforts women facing riskier than usual pregnancies, as a maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) physician. She is passionate about her medical specialty, treating high-risk pregnancies, which requires incredible finesse. During the two years in Israel she spent with her family recently, Dr. Karkowsky took time out from practicing medicine to write a book with her memorable experiences and insights.

In her new book "High Risk: Stories of Pregnancy, Birth, and the Unexpected" recently published by Liveright, Karkowsky shares the powerful emotional rewards for a profession with no shortage of tough choices and challenges.

"High Risk" speaks not just to women who are expecting, but to everyone interested in the drama that goes on behind the closed doors of the delivery room. Karkowsky charts that drama through the various stages of pregnancy, in each trimester, at postpartum and beyond. With clarity, humility, and deep compassion, she relates issues concerning a worrisome amnio, an abnormal ultrasound, family history, and even nausea.

"High Risk" also addresses problems within America’s healthcare system. Despite millions of dollars spent on healthcare, more and more American women are dying from complications that arise during pregnancy or childbirth

According to author Danielle Ofri, MD, Ph.D. "High Risk" is “a captivating (and occasionally terrifying!) exploration of what it means to give birth today. Chavi Karkowsky unflinchingly probes the expectations, precedents, myths, realities, and curve balls of modern pregnancy and delivery. This book is a significant contribution to the discourse about women’s health and medicine today."

Presently living and working in New York, Dr. Karkowsky spent most of her childhood in Maryland, where she excelled in her studies at the Hebrew Academy of Greater Washington. Her father Dr. Avi Karkowsky z"l, after acquiring his Ph.D/MD, moved with his young family to Silver Spring. "Avi" as he was fondly called by his young patients, served as a clinical analyst for adult heart medications at the Federal Drug Administration.

In addition to being a respected physician, Chavi Karkowsky has written extensively about healthcare and medicine in Slate, the Daily Beast, the Atlantic, and the Washington Post. "High Risk" is her first book.
