Attempts to assassinate members of Hamas’ military wing by Israel were thwarted multiple times over recent months, Lebanese newspaper al-Akhbar reported on Wednesday.

The reported attempts came in earnest following a botched operation last November in the Gaza Strip that left one IDF special forces soldier dead, according to Hamas security sources who spoke with the publication.

The Gaza-based security sources also noted that unlike previous attempts to kill senior Hamas militants, Israel employed a “silent method” to take out their targets meant to minimize their footprint on the operations.

One alleged perpetrator is accused of trying to poison at least one senior member of the group’s military wing, adding that if the operation had succeeded, it would have been a major blow to the terrorist organization.
