Jerusalem — Palestinian Authority roadworkers destroyed portions of an ancient wall belonging to the biblical site of Joshua’s altar on Mount Ebal, according to a report by the right-wing NGO Shomrim al Hanetzach.

The area of Mount Ebal north of Shechem is located in Area B of the West Bank, and therefore the site is under the auspices of the PA, meaning that the Civil Administration which controls the civil aspects of Judea and Samaria has no oversight on it, according to an explanation by an administration representative. However the Palestinians in the past have caused irrevocable damage to sites even within Area C which is under full Israeli administration, such as the ancient site of Sebastia, which is considered to be the city of Shomron mentioned in the Bible as the seat of the kings of Israel.

Shomrim al Hanetzach reported that Palestinian workers had ground ancient stone from the site’s exterior wall into gravel to pave a road as well as using stones from within the site itself. At present the altar remains intact, but Shomrim al Hanetzach, which focuses on the preservation of Jewish archaeology, said it fears additional damage to the site could still occur.

Joshua’s altar was discovered and identified by archaeologist Adam Zartal in 1982. Zartal was a secular kibbutznik at the time and did not at first realize that he had stumbled upon one of the greatest archaeological discoveries which proves the authenticity of the Bible.

Right-wing politicians were quick to respond to the damage, with Religious Zionist Party head MK Bezalel Smotrich calling the destruction an “insane failure” whose “results are irreversible.” Smotrich promised that his party will demand the closure of the Civil Administration and will require civilian affairs in Judea and Samaria to be dealt with directly by Israeli ministries. Such a move would be a form of de facto sovereignty and would enable the Antiquities Authority to work to preserve the numerous historic sites situated in the region.

MK Matan Kahana (Yamina) said that the destruction was “another sign of the lack of governance by the Netanyahu government which has given up on the cradle of our civilization.”
