The Biden administration plans to approach Iran with a deal over its aggressive approach to the Middle East separate from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with world powers, the Israel Hayom newspaper reported, citing two sources close to the White House.

The proposal to separate the Iranian nuclear issue from Tehran’s expansionist policies had been raised prior to the election by Jake Sullivan – who was chosen by US President Joe Biden to serve as National Security Adviser.

The two sources said the administration has yet to formulate its Iran strategy, but the proposal to distinguish between the nuclear issue and its support for proxy militant groups is one of the ideas being considered.

Once the United States and Iran return to the original nuclear deal, which is not certain, the administration will seek to secure two more future deals.

One proposal aims to improve the nuclear deal, extend its expiration date, and address the issue of the construction of a nuclear warhead. Another is to deal with Iran’s regional presence and minimize its influence in the Middle East.
