US president plans to withdraw 2,500 US soldiers before leaving office

US President Donald Trump is set to issue an order to pull out more American soldiers from Afghanistan and Iraq before he steps down his post on January 20, CNN reported Monday.

Citing two US officials familiar with the subject, the report suggested that the Pentagon has issued a “warning order” to commanders on the ground to begin planning the withdrawal of 2,500 troops in total by January 15.

The move, if implemented, will leave 2,500 troops in Afghanistan and 2,500 troops in Iraq.

In what could have been a preparation for the withdrawal, Trump last week announced that US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper has been “terminated” from his cabinet position and will be replaced by Christopher C. Miller, Director of the National Counterterrorism Center. Read more at i24
