The former chief rabbi is said to have died after a long fight with cancer

Former UK Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks died on Saturday at the age of 72, his official Twitter account confirmed in a post. 

"Baruch Dayan Ha’Emet. It with the deepest sadness that we regret to inform you that Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks (HaRav Ya’akov Zvi ben David Arieh z’’l) passed away early this morning, Saturday 7th November 2020 (Shabbat Kodesh 20th MarCheshvan 5781)," the post reads.

His death reportedly occurred following a long bout with cancer. 

Born on March 8, 1948, Sacks served as the Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth from 1991 to 2013, carrying the title of Av Beit Din (head) of the London Beth Din.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson reacted to the news by extending his condolences to the Sacks family, saying his leadership had a "profound impact" on Britain and across the world. Read more at i24
