Tehran's embassy said involved in plot to assassinate a long-time personal friend of US President Trump

Iran is considering a plot to assassinate the US ambassador to South Africa in retaliation for the targeted killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, according to a report published Sunday by Politico.

Citing two US intelligence officials familiar with internal CIA intelligence reviews, the newspaper reported that the spy community has warned 66-year-old Lana Marks of the threat.

The intelligence pointing to a plot has been getting increasingly specific over the past weeks, the report added, with the Iranian embassy in the country involved in the operation.

Marks, a close associate of US President Donald Trump and a prominent fashion handbag designer, was born in South Africa and took over the US diplomatic mission there in late 2019. Read more at i24
