Unlike the United Arab Emirates, opposition to normalizing ties with Israel runs deep in Bahrain

A number of residents of Bahrain, a kingdom ruled by Sunnis and with a large Shiite population, took to social media to denounce the kingdom's newly announced normalization deal with Israel over the weekend.

The hashtags "Bahrainis Against Normalization" and "Normalization Is Betrayal" instantly started trending on Twitter as soon as US President Donald Trump announced the deal between Bahrain and Israel on Friday.  

Unlike the United Arab Emirates, which struck a historic peace accord with Jerusalem last month, opposition to normalizing ties with Israel runs deep in Bahrain, where civil society is active, despite a severe crackdown on civil rights over the past decade.

Former MK Ali Alaswad wrote on Twitter that the announcement of a deal with Israel "was a dark day in Bahrain's history." Read more at i24
