'At least in the short term, most people who get Covid-19 won't get it again,' researchers say

Patients with COVID-19 remain largely immune to it for at least six months after their recovery, a new study by the University of Oxford revealed Friday.

The finding comes as part of a large-scale study into coronavirus reinfection -- a phenomenon deemed to be quite rare by healthcare professionals.

The authors highlighted they had not yet gathered enough data to make a judgment on the possibility of reinfection more than six months after recovery. Determining how long the immunity lasts in recovering patients is the end goal of the study.

"We can be confident that, at least in the short term, most people who get Covid-19 won't get it again," Professor David Eyre, who is one of the study's authors, said.

The Oxford study into reinfection drew on data from regular coronavirus testing of 12,180 health care workers at Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) over a period of 30 weeks. Read more at i24
