BaltimoreJewishLife.com (BJL) is proud to partner with STAR-K CERTIFICATION that realizes that there is no substitute for a person’s own Rav. In an effort to offer a possible solution, it has launched its Institute of Halachah as a public service. Over the years, the agency’s Kashrus Hotline has answered generic halachic questions from kosher consumers the world over, including inquiries regarding the kosher status of foods and certified Sabbath mode appliances. The formation of a separate official division within STAR-K testifies to the need for addressing these issues.
The Institute of Halachah is directed by HaRav Mordechai Frankel, under the guidance of HaRav Moshe Heinemann, STAR-K’s Rabbinic Administrator. It is an invaluable resource for a diverse array of rabbis to discuss general halachic matters, as well as gain access to source materials for shiurim and answers to congregants’ questions.

Baltimore, MD - Jan. 21, 2026 - Maryland's top lawmakers announced legislation Monday to ban dynamic pricing at grocery stores, a practice that could allow retailers to charge different prices to customers based on algorithmic calculations and demand.
Governor Wes Moore, along with leaders from both chambers of the Maryland General Assembly, unveiled the bill at BD Provisions, a bulk grocery store in Anne Arundel County.
"This is not a fair market, this is a stacked deck. This is about profit, profit squeezing," said Moore. "Profit that's extracted from people who are seeing their bills increase and who are struggling to afford basic goods..

During the Second Temple, the Greek empire reigned (over Israel),1 and they (the Greeks) passed decrees against the Jews and (tried) to erase their religion, and did not allow them to carry out Torah (study) or the commandments. They put their hands on their property and their daughters. They entered the Temple, destroyed and made the pure unclean. The Jews were in great distress because of them and were much oppressed, until the G-d of their fathers had mercy on them, delivering them from their hands and saving them. Then overcame, the sons of the Hasmonean High Priest, (the Greeks) and killed them and saved the Jews from their hands. They appointed a king from the Priests, and the kingdom of Israel was restored for more than 200 years until the destruction of (the) second (Temple). When the Jews overcame their enemies and destroyed them, it was the 25th of Kislev2 when they entered the Sanctuary (inner room) and did not find pure (olive) oil in the Temple, except one jar sealed with seal of the High Priest, and it did not contain enough to light except for one day only. But they lit from it the lamps of the Menorah3 for eight days, until they could crush olives and produce a (new quantity) of pure oil. For these reasons, decreed the Sages of that generation that these eight days that begin on the 25th Kislev, will be days of joy and praise. One lights on them lamps at evening at the entrance to the houses, every evening of the eight nights to show off and demonstrate the miracle. These days are called ''Hanukah'' that is to say ''they rested'' (chanu) on the ''25'' ('th of the month) because on the 25th they rested from their enemies. and also because of those days they (re)-dedicated the house (Temple) which their foes had defiled. Also some say that it is a commandment to increase slightly the festive meals on Hanukah. Another reason is because the work of (building) the Sanctuary (in the desert) was completed in these days. One should tell one's children the story of the miracles that were done for our fore-fathers in those days, (see Josephus) However, these meals are not considered as part of the commandment unless one says at the meal songs of praise. One should increase charity in these Hanukah days, for this can help mend any defects in our souls. This charity, should be given particularly to poor Torah scholars. (KSA 139:1) 1) 352 BCE until 70 CE 2) 139 BCE 3) The Menorah was made of gold and had seven branches.

Baltimore, MD - Jan. 20, 2026 - While the Chanukah menorahs may have been put away, the warmth of the candles was more vibrant than ever at the L’Chaim Adult Day Center during a lively post-Chanukah candle-making workshop hosted by the JCS Memory Café.
This wasn't just a therapeutic session; it was a joyful, high-energy afternoon filled with laughter and shared stories. Participants dove into the tactile fun of hand-rolling beeswax sheets in traditional blue and white, enjoying a "crunch and roll" sensory experience that was as playful as it was grounding. The room buzzed with energy as participants engaged in this heat-free craft, making the art of candle-making a centerpiece for natural conversation and the building of new, supportive friendships.&nbs...
Baltimore, MD - Jn. 20, 2026 - Former Republican Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said he will not seek a return to the Government House this year, ending speculation about a potential challenge to Democratic Gov. Wes Moore.
Hogan made the announcement in a guest commentary published by The Baltimore Sun, writing that he would not enter the race despite continued interest from supporters and political observers.
Although Hogan never formally declared his candidacy, recent polling suggested Moore would have entered the contest with an advantage. A hypothetical matchup conducted by Gonzales Research and Media Services showed Moore leading Hogan 52% to 38%, with 10% of respondents undecided.
At the same time, Hogan continues to draw strong marks from many Marylanders for his time in office. A May...

Baltimore, MD - Jan. 20, 2026 - As quickly as it arrived, state health data shows that Maryland may now be on a downward trend of a “severe” influenza surge occurring over the winter holidays and early January.
But public health officials say now is not the time for Marylanders to let up on protective measures and public health practices, as the season is not over yet. There have already been 14 flu-related deaths in Maryland so far this year, already doubling last year’s death toll, with weeks left in the current flu season. Last year’s season did not peak until February.
“We’re seeing a bad flu season,” said Dr. Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association.
“It’s not too late to get your flu shot&h...
Baltimore, MD- Jan. 20, 2026 - More than half of Marylanders support local jurisdictions having some coordination with federal immigration enforcement inside detention facilities, according to a new poll obtained by FOX45 News.
The Gonzales Poll, conducted Dec. 21 through Jan. 6, shows approximately 54% of Marylanders support giving local jails the legal authority to run background checks on all detainees in cooperation with ICE. The poll was conducted for the Maryland Freedom Caucus, a caucus in the House of Delegates with seven Republican members from the chamber.
Currently, eight jurisdictions in Maryland have opted to participate in a program called 287(g), which allows officers in detention facilities to alert federal immigration authorities if someone who’s already in c...
