Baltimore, MD - Sept. 20, 2024 - Yesterday, (Thursday) I had a productive meeting with the Baltimore Police Department leadership to review all cases and crimes in the community. Each incident, no matter the size, impacts not only the victim but also the entire community. I want to extend my deepest thanks to all of our community partners who offer assistance and provide critical information to help solve these cases.
Unfortunately, there were two carjackings in the past month. One involved a senior who was carjacked on the first Saturday of this month, and a person of interest in this case has been identified. The second occurred on Labyrinth Road that same week, but thanks to swift police work, the suspects were arrested just hours later with the victim’s belongings still in their possession.
There were also four street robberies within the neighborhood. Three recent armed robberies near local shuls appear to be connected, and BPD is asking for help in identifying the license plate of the BMW involved. This is crucial to utilizing police technology to locate the vehicle.
The forth incident, which took place on Clark’s Lane and Willowglen, involved a teenager who was knocked off his scooter.
Despite these incidents, and my concern for each crime that occurred, I’m encouraged to share that crime in the Northwest District is down 29% year-over-year under the new district boundaries. Carjackings, in particular, have dropped by 47%! Most importantly, clearance rates are up, meaning more crimes are being solved. Additionally, the Northwest District currently has the fewest robberies of any police district in the city.
I want to personally thank Northwest District Leadership, and Commissioner Worley for their swift responses to these incidents and for providing additional patrols, licensed plate readers, and more resources that will continue to be deployed.
Commissioner Worley will be meeting with community leaders in the coming days to discuss strategies to further improve public safety and safety over the upcoming holidays. Together, we will continue to work towards making our community safer for all.
