Imposing a fourth nationwide lockdown on Israel is not beyond the realms of possibility despite the country’s vast, record-setting vaccination campaign, coronavirus czar Prof Nachman Ash said on Wednesday.

Speaking with Channel 12 News, Ash criticized the decision to reopen Ben Gurion Airport, saying it was “far from ideal” and “brought with it the risk that new virus strains will be introduced into Israel.”

Last week, Israel announced it would reopen its main international airport on Sunday, in order to repatriate Israeli citizens ahead of parliamentary elections slated to be held on March 23.

Only Israeli nationals will be allowed to travel into the country as restrictions aiming to keep coronavirus variants from entering Israel will still be in place for foreign travelers.
