The Department of Education announced Tuesday it was firing nearly half of its workforce, the latest Trump administration move to shrink the federal government that could face swift legal challenge.
A senior department official said 1,315 staffers will be let go and received the notification Tuesday.
The Education Department started President Trump’s second term with more than 4,000 employees, but even before Tuesday, hundreds had already been put on leave or had taken a buyout offer.
After this reduction, there will be 2,183 employees left with the department, which Trump has repeatedly called to shutter completely.
The senior official said the reduction in employees will not impact student aid, Free Application for Federal Student Aid forms, formula...
The House on Tuesday passed a funding bill to avert an end-of-the-week government shutdown, teeing up the measure for consideration in the Senate.
The chamber cleared the continuing resolution (CR) in a largely party-line 217-213 vote, with just one Democrat — Rep. Jared Golden (D-Maine) — bucking his party’s leaders to back the measure. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) was the lone GOP “no” vote.
The legislation would fund the government through Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year, while boosting funds for defense programs and imposing cuts to nondefense funding. Current funding expires at 11:59 p.m. Friday.
“This was a big vote on the House floor, the Republicans stood together and we had one Democrat vote with us to do the ...

In my capacity as a television show host, I have seen and heard a lot. But nothing prepared me for the statement of Shir, daughter of recently released hostage Keith Siegal, who survived 484 days of captivity and joined his wife Aviva, who was also held hostage for 51 days.
I was certain that Shir, like the emotional relatives of other released captives, had come to the Channel 14 studio to call on viewers to support the hostage deal at any cost. I admit: I struggle with that. On the one hand, after all they’ve been through, they have the right to say whatever is on their mind. But on the other hand, don’t those who think differently also have that same right? Not to say everything, but to disagree slightly? To raise questions and concerns? To suggest other ways to free captiv...
President Trump said on Tuesday he was buying a Tesla vehicle as he doubled down on his support of Elon Musk, who has come under mounting scrutiny for leading the Trump administration’s government cost initiatives.
“I’m gonna buy because number one, it’s a great product. As good as it gets. Number two, because this man [Elon Musk] has devoted his energy and his life to doing this and I think he has been treated unfairly,” Trump told reporters outside of the White House Tuesday afternoon.
Trump delivered the remarks alongside Musk and his son, just hours after he first announced on social media he would buy a Tesla in support of the tech entrepreneur. Multiple Teslas, including the Cybertruck model, were parked outside of the White House.

The U.S. will immediately restore military aid and intelligence sharing to Ukraine following bilateral talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday, with Ukraine expressing “readiness” to accept a 30-day ceasefire proposal.

Baltimore, MD – March 11, 2025 - 12:12PM - The traffic light is out in both directions at the intersection of Sudbrook and Reisterstown.
Reminder: The rule for when traffic lights are out is to come to a stop at the light and to treat the intersection or roadway as a regular stop. If it is a four-way intersection, treat it like a four-way stop. If it is a two- or three-way intersection, treat it as a two- or three-way stop, respectively. The same right-of-way rules also apply, such as allowing vehicles in or at the stop first to proceed first and allowing the vehicle on the right to proceed if two vehicles arrive at the stop at the same time.

Baltimore, MD - March 11, 2025 - Johns Hopkins University is among 60 colleges and universities around the country that received warnings from Education Secretary Linda McMahon Monday that they could face penalties under the Civil Rights Act if they fail to protect Jewish students from antisemitism during pro-Palestinian campus protests.
Last year, the Beach at Johns Hopkins’ Homewood campus was the site of an encampment by pro-Palestinian protesters who called on the university to divest “from all companies with ties to the state of Israel.”
The encampment ended two weeks after it began after university officials agreed to review its investments.
Although Johns Hopkins is the only colleges in the state to receive McMahon’s warning, American University ...

What can be wrong with canned corn? All the ingredients are kosher. Let's listen to Rabbi Mordechai Stareshefsky a Rabbinic Coordinator at the OU as he explains some potential issues with the most basic food items. This serves as a reminder why one should always ensure that there is a good hechsher on everything they buy.
A federal judge on Monday scheduled a Wednesday court hearing for Mahmoud Khalil, a recent Columbia University graduate who was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), forbidding the government from moving forward with deportation efforts before then.
Lawyers for Khalil, a legal immigrant and leading pro-Palestinian demonstrator whose arrest was cheered by President Trump, have also filed a motion seeking his return to New York.
Khalil’s attorney, Amy Greer, said in a statement to The Hill that it hadn’t been immediately clear where ICE took Khalil. His team had originally thought New Jersey, but reports, including from The New York Times, indicated he had been taken to Louisiana.
Trump and his administration celebrated Khalil’s detentio...
